Remember !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! on the rear-right quarter of my car because CarStar wouldn’t honor their work even though it was rusting out within their warranty period?

WELL, guess what! It is rusting out on the same area that NEW guy fixed in the exact same place!

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

I have heard nothing but good things about this guy, generally, so I really hope this is a fluke and he stands behind his work and fixes it for free...it’s been only 2 months and 14 days since I picked it up from him. That is unacceptable as I didn’t spend $951 to repair rust and have it last less than 75 days...

How come it’s so hard to find people who can do bodywork properly...

I know it’s not bad rust, nor a lot, but it’s pretty frustrating to have spent all that money for apparently nothing...

It could be worse, you could have a Mazda3.

Guessing both places just ground the rust  off, sanded it smooth, and resprayed the panel. That will fix it for a short period as that rust is coming from the inside out.

To do it right would require cutting out that area ( and a significant area around it ) to remove the rust ( which is coming from the inside out ), then welding in new, getting both sides coated, etc.

oh... thats coz bodywork is a dying trade... new panels got too cheap... most shops now have 1 or 2 experienced panel beaters and all the other work (paint prep and shit) gets done by cheap trainees

if you want to find a good bodywork guy go to a classic car restorer...it will cost you

Probably for the same reason it’s hard to find mechanics who can actually do work properly, or anyone who can actually do their job properly.........

There are most likely some super tiny holes in the sheet metal allowing moisture to come in from the inner fender.

Yup....first-gen Mazda 3s are made of rust, I think...

Y eah....no local classic car resto shops though, and as much as I love my Accent, it’s probably not worth the price they would charge...

Supposedly this guy had checked it for that when he ground it back....guess he didn’t check hard enough...

I don’t know if it’s your guy’s fault. My experience has been that rust is terminal cancer ; not fixable unless you cut it out followed by radiation and chemotherapy.

I get that, but then when I paid him $951 to fix the rust in the EXACT same area the rust is now coming back, why did he not cut out the rust, weld in a new piece and paint it then rather than just apparently grinding it back and painting it? I didn’t ask him to sand it back and paint it, I asked him to FIX it and spent a lot of money doing so.

I was under the assumption welding in a new piece is what he was going to do because, as you said, that is the only way I know to solve the problem. If he made the choice to not follow the most effective repair method, that is on him, isn’t it?

If you just told him to “FIX it”, I think a bit of blame is on you (just a little bit) for not specifying what you wanted.

But overall you’re right, $951 is a lot of money if he didn’t cut out the rust.

Maybe it is on me a bit...I guess I could’ve been more specific, but doesn’t ‘fix’ in this context imply to solve the problem in a way that it won’t come back again...i.e. cut out, weld in new piece, repaint?

You don’t call a washing machine repairman, tell him to fix your washing machine and expressly say ‘I want it fixed so it doesn’t break again in two months.’, it’s just a give expectation that it’s fixed properly.

You are correct.  I’d be pissed after spending that much and having it come back so quickly.

Yeah, he does seem like a nice guy though and I have heard nothing but positive comments about his work, so really hoping it’s a fluke. Already contacted him with pictures and he said to stop in anytime so he can look at it.

I’ve seen this exact thing, that rust is coming through from the back of the panel. You can sand it all you want, but the section needs cut out and back to clean metal all around, then a new piece welded in and refinished. 75 days is a good while for this to have waited to pop through, I’ve seen it do it in under a week.

We had a very dry summer here compared to the norm....this hurricane was the first real rain we’ve had in like....4 months other than short, sporadic showers .

Just hoping I can get it sorted out!
